Acoma Pueblo Known as Sky City, Acoma Pueblo was strategically built on top of a 357-foot sandstone mesa many hundreds of years ago for effective defense against enemies. It is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States. Guided tours and camera permits are available at the Visitor Center and Museum at the base of the mesa.
El Morro National Monument Famous for its 200-foot sandstone bluff, the bottom of the monument contains inscriptions from late 13th century pueblo Indians, to 16th century Spanish conquistadores, to 19th century U.S. Army expeditions. A two-mile hike winds up the sides of the bluff, leading to the top and a view of a box canyon enclosed by El Morro. Across the top of the bluff are remnants of unexcavated and excavated pueblo dwellings, kivas and other structures.
